July Newsletter

Gala Days and Canada 150 were celebrated one week apart in Kingsport during the month of June.  It is impossible to mention the names of all the organizers and volunteers that made these two weekends so successful but rest assured each individual contribution is greatly appreciated.

Race Against the Tide tripled in size this year from 18-57 runners!  Despite the drizzle of rain the runners appeared to really enjoy themselves especially the young students who gleefully turned summersaults in the mud after they crossed the finish line.  This event has the potential of turning into a major event.

The Chicken BBQ sold out; the Park Canteen did a brisk business, as did the Tide’s In Canteen particularly on Sunday night while the band Test of Time entertained the crowd before the fireworks display at dusk brought an end to the festivities.

The dreary weather did have an effect on the parade (which was small but an enthusiastic one) and on the children’s games as well.  Let’s hope for better weather next year.  Young and old enjoyed the gathering of small animals at the park as part of the 4-H demonstration.

People took pleasure in gathering at the hall for a chat over coffee and muffins.  On leaving many had at least one fresh baked goodie in their hand.  Two model train displays were of great interest as was the chance to have a tarot card reading.

The Kings County Concert Band offered rousing entertainment at the Emmanuel United Church while lovely harp music was played at the waterfront.

On July 1st Canada 150 was held inside the hall again due to rain but it was a spirited group who sang Oh Canada together.  Thanks to Donna Giffin and Sharon Howard for decorating the hall so brightly in red and white balloons and tablecloths and to Kelly Stevens for the cupcakes topped with red/white icing and little Canadian flags.  The cake decorated replicating the special Canada 150 flag was awesome!

With the warm weather I hope you are visiting the waterfront and the Tide’s In Canteen which is now open 11am-8pm.
